Spike Days
The ceremonial gold spike that was driven to join the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads, connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco by rail and by extension attaching L.A. to the transcontinental railroad and the East Coast, will be on view during five special days throughout Overland to California. The spike is engraved on four sides, as well as on its head, with the words “Last Spike Connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco by Rail Sept. 5th / 1876.”
