This blockbuster 1971 movie adaptation of the Broadway smash centers on Tevye (Topol, in an Oscar-nominated performance), a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of his wife, Golde, and a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters, deal with their romantic entanglements and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Based on a short story by Sholem Aleichem and featuring an iconic musical score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler on the Roof is a timeless, heartwarming masterpiece propelled by the universal theme of “tradition.”
