Chinyakare & Zulu Spear

The Chinyakare Ensemble is a family of musicians, dancers, and teachers who tell colorful stories using song and dance. Their traditional African dance depicts scenes from everyday life in Southern Africa in general, and in Zimbabwe in particular. The singing, dancing, and knowledge is accompanied by music made with distinctive instruments like the mbira or “thumb piano,” ngoma drums and the chipendani, known to insiders as the “single-string mouth bow.” Even the names of the instruments are music to the ears! Chinyakare’s members seek to impress upon their audiences the importance of goal-setting, perseverance and thankfulness– along with the beauty, excitement, and spirit of ancient African performance.
