Noise Pop Presents: Nicole Atkins, Lauren Ruth Ward

Nicole Atkins is a singer-songwriter, and her new album, “Goodnight Rhonda Lee,” splashed down this past summer. Her story contains many chapters, and her journey from her hometown of Asbury Park to Music City includes several round trips from sobriety to dependence and back. The titular “Rhonda Lee” is Atkins’ previous (and now-banished) alter-ego and the collection of songs are “vintage soul” combined with what NPR called “a Brill Building-style grasp of rich melody and sturdy structure.” Her “little bursts of therapeutic creativity” tell a powerful tale.
