Unique and Immersive Poetry Event

Could there be anything more intimate than a secret?

Welcome to a unique and immersive poetry event that takes poetry outside classrooms and lecture halls and places it in the lush interiors of a bordello.

Madam Tallula presents a night of grinning yellows, spinning reds, golden eyes; a trail of paper faces that lead to your wildest fancies. Join her, along with Ach, Suzette, as we celebrate LA’s 5th Annual Masquerade with poetry, burlesque, music, tarot readings, poetic souvenirs, installations, live music, aerials, and beyond.

    Repeat Visit - Disappointed

I came to the Poetry Brothel for the first time a year or two ago and was blown away. The room was packed. Everyone was dressed up. The “whores” were in full character working the room. There were multiple poems read at a time, multiple different acts – it was much more rowdy and infectious of a good time.

I brought two friends with me this time for the masquerade. Half of the people working the event weren’t even in masks. They were quiet on stage – for the large part, not performers. The MCs were alright, but the talent was muted. We bought some chips to engage poets, and instead of a token per reading, it was a token per person per reading. I’m sorry – $10 a token, and if you’re in a group of 3, that means $30 for ONE POEM reading – of the POET’S CHOICE?? No. That’s not how it used to be. They’d let you choose a theme and read a poem about that topic. They’d sit and talk to you a bit, often give you 2 or 3.

I get that they’re trying to make money, but I felt worked. Not going back.
