Sounds Good to Me: Ska, Metal-Core, and Synthpop

Your Hookup to Three Hot Bands This Week

By Adam Casalino – January 22, 2018

Another week, another chance to rock out the Bay. Amazing musical experiences are at your fingertips, but we know you’re too busy to find them. And, besides, how do you separate the good stuff from the garbage? Rest easy, mi amigos. Here are three great shows you won’t want to miss.

Fishbone
Thu 2/1/18 @ Cornerstone, Berkeley
Fishbone ain’t your daddy’s ska band. Um, if your daddy liked ska. They have been trailblazing their way through the history of American Ska, Funk, Punk, Rock Fusion, and Black Rock since starting their professional career in Los Angeles’ burgeoning, Alternative Rock music scene of the mid-1980s. They have toured the globe with such acts as the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Roots, and Les Claypool/Primus. They will be at Cornerstone at Berkeley this month.

Of Mice & Men
Wed 1/31/18 @ UC Theatre, Berkeley
We know some of you need to feel your music. Like, feel it in your skull. You need that pure, unadulterated, high-octane rock. Of Mice & Men should fit the bill. This isn’t that old book you’ve never read. This is metal-core at its finest. Hailing from Costa Mesa, California, the band’s lineup currently consists of lead vocalist and bassist Aaron Pauley, lead guitarist Phil Manansala, rhythm guitarist Alan Ashby, and drummer Valentino Arteaga. Be sure to get a heavy dose of their goodness when they hit up The UC Theatre.

Howard Jones
Mon 1/29/18 @ The Chapel, San Francisco
Howard Jones might not be a household name. But fans of New Wave and synthpop owe a lot to this pioneer. It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the music scene with his English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics. Today he enthralls audiences with his amazing shows. He incorporates specially commissioned visuals, projected both in front and behind the band and invites the audience to participate through smart phone apps, customized clothing, and fluorescent makeup. Only The Chapel can house such awesomeness.

This is a panoply of music delights. Who knew that such great music was right outside your door? Music fans won’t be disappointed with this selection. But you can only get in on the action, if you book through RushTix. Don’t miss out!
