Sarah Brant Culture Squad Profile

1. What was the show that first excited you about live theater?

I am going to guess West Side Story or The Wiz. Two of the six records I was always playing (others included Porgy and Bess). For West Side Story, I couldn’t have been more than 4 when my mom took me. I remember not being able to see over the seats, but I sang the entire thing, especially connecting with Ricky. What I conveniently don’t remember, but my mom does, was a lot of people in the neighboring seats giving me dirty looks.

2. Who is your favorite performer?

Xandra Ibarra (La Chica Boom), Ali Wong, SF Mime troupe (some specific shows), Margaret Cho, George Carlin…  Really anyone who can make me think/grimace/laugh and see see a different layer of social justice through unassuming storytelling.

3. Where are you from and what brought you to the Bay Area?

My parents brought me into the world already in the Bay Area. So… Home?

4. What would you tell someone who would rather stay on the couch all day and watch Friends reruns than have a night out on the town?

But it is so sunny out! This show looks terrible. You look pale under your skin. I’m allergic to your cat. Let’s go.

5. What has been your favorite RushTix event?

Echo Brown’s Black Virgins… White Hipsters was so fantastic. When I saw her working out an early clip of it at Solo Sundays (Stage Werx) I went back and saw it start up at the Marsh.
